Subject: composite bodywork and painting questions
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1
i am in the process of doing a hack job repairing some rather severe
body damage to my van and have a couple of questions. i was able to
hammer the damaged panel to within an inch or so of the panel it
seperated from, now i plan to fiberglass over the gap. i am planning
to tape over the gap from the outside, spray in some expanding foam
then sand it into shape to form a base for the glass. what i'm
wondering about is the best way to keep the fiberglass from sliding
down the side of the vertical surface while i wait for the resin to
set. i was thinking of taping the top of the fiber to some metal then
coming back later to put resin on the topmost part after the rest has
set. but i also saw that bondo makes a "jelly resin". has anyone had
experience with this? is it a good "non sag" solution for putting a
lot of glass on a vertical surface? any other suggestions on getting
this to stick?
next question: i'm going to do a nice hack paint job over my hack
body work. i was thinking of using rust oleum rusty metal primer and
then some matte black brush applied paint. anyone know if this is
compatible with whatever vw paint i dont sand off? anyone have a rec
of good brand of paint?
thanks.
Ben.
