Well without a picture or something , how is anyone to know ? I assume the case isn't melted with the crankshaft showing... Obviously your choices are : - fire it up and see what it does - pull it and toss it - pull it and disassemble and inspect. I seldom can find time to inspect, sell, and package and ship vanagon parts these days, but most likely I have any small or large part you could need for that repair.
