Dex-col is a organic based coolant which makes it phosphate free and it will not corrode the heads on a vanagon. I would not think any coolant is good for 100k miles so changing it every few years is a good idea. When switching from a different kind of coolant it is important to remove all of the old coolant. If you can smell coolant in the rinse than you need to rinse more. The sludge issue of dexcol is related to a number of factors, coolant used too long, coolant, contamination with other coolant or oil and coolant overheating.
