Congrats on your project.
Re skylights - the contour in the skylight area is odd shaped- an larger RV
might work, but might be tricky to mate nicety to the shape of the westy
roof.
What I like to do - it's low tech, but works well.
I get bronze tinted Plexiglas. I buy it from a plastic company and have them
cut it to size....like about a 3 inch overlap around the stock skylight
hole. Quarter inch thick.
This last time I got some Plexiglas called 'edge glow' and it looks like a
bright orange neon light on the edges - very trippy.
Then I get a drill bit for plastic...and stainless screws and locknuts...
And I seal the Plexiglas to the roof using white caulking compound.
I find this to be a great overall set up - no moving parts, so nothing to
break.
Let's in light, you can still see the stars, but it's not glary bright in
hot sun, etc.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I ended up putting it on my roof rack
anyway. I picked up too much other stuff to fit it inside.
I am very excited about this project. I've been putting together a parts
list this morning. Hope to have it all finished in a few months. I'm Going
to try small hole method, custom bed. I got the fold out bed from the doner
westy. Not sure if I can make it work or not.
For some reason the skylight has been blocked off with plywood. I have to
investigate to see what is left in there. I might try to put a larger RV
skylight in. I'm not sure what it available.
stay tuned..
