Dex-col is a organic based coolant which makes it phosphate free and it will not corrode the heads on a vanagon. I would not think any coolant is good for 100k miles so changing it every few years is a good idea. When switching from a different kind of coolant it is important to remove all of the old coolant. If you can smell coolant in the rinse than you need to rinse more. The sludge issue of dexcol is related to a number of factors, coolant used too long, coolant, contamination with other coolant or oil and coolant overheating. If you can avoid these issues with the vanagon you will be very happy with dex-cool. gary Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 14:12:46 -0400 From: Allan Streib <streib@CS.INDIANA.EDU> Subject: Re: Dex-Cool . . . They're easy to find, just google "dex cool problems". Here are a couple:

Whether you think these are "solid evidence" is up to you; you are of course free to use ANY coolant you choose in YOUR vehicle; my policy is to use OEM coolant in any vehicle and that's what I do in my cars now.

My personal experience is that after switching to Dex-Cool in a '91 Jetta I developed coolant leaks around the temperature sensors and between the cooling hose flange and the head. I'll admit the only evidence I have that this was caused by the Dex-Cool is the timing.

Allan
