Equilon Dex-cool, or VW G12 "lifetime" coolant, which is the OAT coolant from the factory on newer VWs? G12 is not the same as Dexcool, and they are not made to the same specifications (GM specification 6277M, VW specifies TL 774-F). I believe it is Valvoline/Zerex Glysantin G 30, but some say it's made by Pentosin.

You can see at the URI below that these are two different fluids. BASF makes G 30 to meet the VW specs, and G 34 to meet the GM specs. You can bet that if they could meet both specs with a single formulation, they would have. I can't say for Vanagons, but Dex-cool should never be used in a newer VW.
