Subject: Things I Learned Today (or, "I are a idiot")

1. When measuring fuel pressure, the #2 vac hose that Bentley's has you disconnect is NOT the one going to the vacuum unit. It is the one going to the fuel pressure regulator. Sharper eyes would catch the faint leader from "2" and the hose on the photo. Someone who knows what he is doing would know that that's the hose to disconnect. When Dennis and Mark said that my results made no sense, they were (of course) right. Sigh. I are an idiot. My apologies for wasting everyone's bandwidth on this one.

2. While Bentley's does not directly tell us what normal manifold vacuum should be, it can be inferred from several of the test procedures in the manual, i.e., ignition settings p. 28.30, which specify maximum vacuums of 360 mbar (27 cm Hg = 10 - 11'' Hg). My manifold measures at 11'' Hg. I compared this reading with a second instrument with the same result, and with a second Vanagon with a nicely-running engine which also had 11'' Hg. Things I Learned Today.

So. Whatever is responsible for my mileage being poorer than what others report (results on http://camping.elliott.googlepages.com/poormileage ) ain't vacuum or fuel-pressure related. The other things I have checked are on that poormileage page. I have not checked for brain damage, though. Based on what I have learned today, it's worth doing.
