Ah ha! I see what the problem is! I'm clueless, /that's/ what the problem is! What I see when I peer down the barrel of the coil's center connection is nothing. Looks like the inside of a drinking glass. Other versions have a center pin in there?

Mr. Squirrel, there are two different coils, one like you have and one with the "pin in the hole". The one with the "pin in the hole" goes with the new style distributor cap that has "pins in the holes" and therefore all the wires are different also so that they connect to the "pins in the holes" ! The early version coil as you have can be used with new style cap and wires as long as you change out the wire end terminal of the wire to the coil to the older style terminal end. These ends can be recouped from an old set of wires or from your FLAPS. The newer style cap and wires are preferable as the wire to cap and wire to coil connections are more secure. They can be fitted to all Vanagon distributors. Only the rotors are different, large hole early version, small hole later version.

Cheers,
