What I did on my '84. Don't know if it's the best or not...

Jack up van a bit on one side. Put piece of 4x4 vertically under the engine to the ground, then "relax" the jack so the 4x4 is supporting some of the engine weight. This is just to get the tension off the bolts when you pull them. You don't need an engine hoist.

Pull all the bolts. The whole carrier drops down as a unit. I don't remember having trouble with the exhaust. Obviously, don't let anyone rock the car too much when the engine is sitting there on the 4x4...

It's not a hard job. I'm not much of a mechanic and it took me maybe an hour.
