I think the reason the 2.2 took Ben's 2.5 was the duration of the race - too short.

On September 29, in Santa Fe, the Great Vanagon Race, part II, took place. There were eight of us - Westys, non-Westys, Syncros, non-Syncros, an Audi engine, Subi 2.2s (3 of them), a Subi 2.5, a TDI biodeisel, a stock 1.9 and a stock 2.1. We raced on Interstate 25 from one exit to another (between four and five miles) - and it was mostly gradually uphill. It was also at 7,000 ft. elevation which has a definite impact on the speed that can be gained going uphill. My Subi 2.2 beat the other two Subis (both Syncros), but after a half mile or so the Audi went by me like a bat out of h*** and after maybe a mile the 2.5 passed me as well. See link below for pictures and commentary.
