Here is the story: The P.O. purchased the new 1991 Vanagon GL Westfalia Canadian model in Germany. Drove it around Europe for a couple years then brought it home to Canada. I purchased it from him about 5 years ago. He told me when I bought it that the engine had been recalled at 50 000 KM and replaced with a brand new one. Is this possible?

Unlikely. I have a '92 purchased new and never heard of that one & can't imagine a recall of the entire engine....although there are those on the list who would argue that VW should have recalled ALL waterboxer engines ;-)

There was a recall of the later ones for replacement of injectors. The O-ring did not seal properly in some cases and allowed egress of water causing hard starting or rough running....can't remember exactly which now....maybe both. I wonder if the PO was getting confused with this recall?
