Possibly, if the heads leaked. By a new engine, it would likely be a VW reman engine. My '88 Westy had a VW reman engine (long block) AND trans installed in '91 at 165k kms under the previous owner (I have the receipts since new). The engine was done under warranty; the trans was not. (3/4 slider hub failed). I am the 2nd owner, and yes, the 1st owner drove it a LOT - by 1991 he had circled the continent twice already, judging by the reciepts I have. He drove the 2nd engine from Vancouver to Toronto in 3 days, where the first oil change was done. This engine was still going strong and leak free when I pulled it out two years ago with around 220k kms on it. They must have done something better on those remans to make the heads last longer...
