I forget which side the pickup for the tank is on, and if it's different with a syncro and a 2WD, but lowering the position of the pickup by driving on the shoulder) might buy you a small bit more distance. I set my trip meter to zero when I fill up and plan for about 70km more or driving when I hit the last white mark on the gas gauge. I also cary a roundish 9L emergency gas tank inside my spare tire. Prestone (I think) used to sell a non-volatile gasoline substitute that could be safely stored inside your vehicle (it only worked inside a hot engine).
