If the issue is having enough money to create an enhanced engine/transmission package.... There's lots of ways to get good deals. I've scored fairly freshly rebuilt transmissions for 75 bucks, a few times. Whole subaru engines and fuel systems for as low as 300 etc. It does help to be crawling around pick-n-pull type junkyards, keeping an eye out for deals anywhere you happen to be, online, in your local city etc. There's great deals to be had all over the place if you look. It's all fun. Scott

An engine face lift without a matching transmission is only half way to Vanagon heaven. Not sure if there is any matching transmission available. It would be another $3k if there is one. Without one it is still a. Maybe it's a top dog among all dogs. I agree. It's not just a money issue.
