I just had the odo/speedo repaired by Overseas Speedometer in Texas. They will set the mileage to anything you specify. Took them about 9 days to get it back to me, and cost around $90.00.

Keep in mind that there are several different versions (gearing) of Vanagon speedo, depending on your transmission. Ex: you can't use a gas speedo in a diesel (well, you can, but it will be wildly inaccurate).
