I have had odometer problems also and have attempted a fix once or twice. The needle pulls straight off (DO be careful, however). I could not remove the contact ribbon that connects the odometer to the rest of the cluster so that limited the effectiveness of my work.

To add miles you might be able to rotate the appropriate number drum when the odo is being worked on, or you could rely on the old electric drill trick to advance the miles. I know that on my own odo after one of my "fixes" it rolled over the 0 in my 0xxxxx to a 7 and now it looks like I have 7xxxxx on the van. Van looks great for that mileage!
