Well i just got back from a victorious test drive, only to find another predicament. It seems that while driving (engine warm or engine cold, doesnt matter), the car will be cruising along under power and all is well....untill suddenly you feel the engine is not running. The tach will remain pegged at whatever RPM its at, as if the engine is still running, but no matter what you do to the gas pedal (push it, pump it, etc), the engine will be entirely unresponsive and it clearly gets quieter. The sound changes from the sound of a healthy engine pumping along, to dead silence (which shocks me everytime i see the Tachometer still pegged at say 3500rpm). Then, as quickly as this predicament arived, the engine will fire again (maybe 3-5 seconds after) and run like a champ. I'm not sure if there is a backfiring sound when the engine kicks into running again, but there may be. She still seems to be running a bit rich (lots of gurgles upon deceleration and rich running sounds at or around idle). This is a 1985vanagon GL with a somewhat posessed 1.9L. Any ideas of where to start looking would be great, i'm out of ideas (and have already shaken everything that moves).

Still driveable, but no, its not going to make a trip to vermont (anytime soon at least). -Craig '85GL
