A change was made during the 1985 model year to thick plastic pipes with metal inserts at the ends so the hose clamps would have something rigid to clamp the hoses to. Previous models had steel pipes of a smaller outside diameter. Both types of pipes fail. Steel ones rust though and leak while the plastic ones crack or fail when the inserts rust.
