Sounds like maybe you have a 'normal' 85 in that it has plastic main coolant pipes with metal inserts in the ends, and that's what you are looking at - a stock 85 plastic main coolant pipe/s.

'early 85's' still have the earlier style metal pipes. There's a VIN split I'm sure. I've found that if I just tell the parts supplier 'it's a very late 85 with a 1.9 waterboxer engine' they still 'have a problem'. But that's what you need....'normal' hoses for a 'normal 85 with 1.9 wbxr.' Unfortunately that means they have to have two styles of hoses for that one year only ..... ( since 86 is a 2.1 wbxr and whole other layout, that makes 85 a two-things-fit year. .......but they had to use up the 6,000 sets of metal pipes they still had left over from 83 and 84 vanagons with the 1.9 wbxr somehow ! ) Oh ! ....if you say it's an 84 you won't have a problem !! I just pulled the main coolant hoses off my '85 Westy and noticed that there is a white plastic covering over the hard coolant tubes thru the firewall. Is this normal for an '85 1.9L, or is this likely something that the previous owner hooked up? I am getting new hoses and want to make sure that I get the right size.

Thanks in advance,

Jay Brown
