While I wouldn't rule out an engine conversion, I must admit that I've never had major gripes with the stock engine. Sure, I have to budget for a head gasket job here and there. And yes, it's leisurely. But it is fast enough to merge onto the highway from an on-ramp, and maintain highway speeds even uphill. (Okay, just barely if it's an extended incline and I'm running the A/C.) If I wanted sports car performance or anything remotely close to it, I wouldn't drive an aerodynamic nightmare with a whole friggin' kitchen inside. And even if I had more horsepower, what would I do with it, given that the Vanagon's handling and braking are ill suited for speeds higher than the WBX can attain? Not that I'd turn down a nice Tiico or Subaru conversion if the price were right, by any means. But personally I can't say that anything about the WBX makes me tremendously anxious to ditch it either (given the cost/hassle involved). Of course others feel differently, so to each his own.
