Benny, I admire your passion and your contributions to this list and your website. But, I would say (like others) that your Mexico assessment with a VW engine is wrong. I would take a VAG I5 over your subie any day.

""" That's what the list is about, trying to cull that information from the experiences of others. Imagine how bad things would be for folks without the lists.. """"

Tell me so! I think i did more than my share here and elswhere.

""""conversely imagine how well it would go if Vanaru launched a documentation effort so that anyone could do it just like you(would be shooting yourself in the foot in a way, but it would lead to a lot more successful DIYers)""""

I hope that all of you did not forgot that i still work on VW boxer engine! I still save them. If i would have one of your ZTEC engine and would be crazy in love with it, everybody would know! Like i now do with Subi's. As for if Vanaru would tell all it secret, and that is impossible even if he would like to do so(to many details), don't worry for my being booked! i'm already fully booked until April with also other stuff than Subi's. I'm slowly letting go the original engine, why, well, comme do one of each with me for a week an you will understand why: http://www.benplace.com/syncro/syncro18.jpg

As for me travelling in a VW van with a VW engine, my days are over, i'm done with that. Personal choice. For those who never tried a more powerfull/reliable conversion, and not only for a few miles, i would think twice about saying VW engine are so great, for the exception on the TD(I) that i respect fully. My van is a wole new vehicle, i don't only use it for weekend gateway but for hard work and long travel. As for the purist... i will keep my mouth shut.

And again, and again.... because some of you seam to forget easily, they where ok for some time, even a long time, now come here and have a ride in a my fully rebuilt Vanagon red Westy, after the ride... let's talk. Since i was on that list, i kept on saying how bad the head design was, that nothing new.

I love that van and you all know that, i just decided to built me a reliable one, my way. Not only the engine side but every other mechanical parts with a lot of small mods that make my travel more enjoyable.

Voila... http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine5.htm
