Subject: Fw: refilling propane bottles, potential hazards?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi- I use the same re-fill coupler. I bought it on ebay. To be safe I re-read the instructions every time I use it. I've had the coupler for over 2 years and have re-filled my share of the 1 lb. tanks. Follow the directions and it works just fine. I always give each re-filled 1 lb. tank a good going over with my nose to try to smell any leaks. So far I've had no problems. I realize sooner or later that upon re-filling a tank might leak. In that case I'll leave it outdoors to empty itself.

Just recently purchased a Mac coupler off of Ebay. This is the device that allows you to refill the small, 1 pound bottles from a larger source. I am a bit concerned about the warning label on the bottle itself which reads:

Do not refill: Federal law prohibits transportation if refilled -- penalty up to $25,000 fine and five years imprisonment. Wow! that one heck of a warning.

How common is it for these bottles to leak after being refilled? They are meant to be disposable after all, so I doubt that the valves are very high quality. Is the risk that great, or am I just being paranoid?

More laws to protect the stupid ! It's very simple - do this outdoors, no open flames, you get the point, then check to see if the valve is leaking or not. Sometimes they will - throw that tank out, it's too old ! The rest of the story is HOW IS ANYONE GONNA TELL IF IT'S BEEN REFILLED ? ! ? Paranoia will get you somewhere you don't wanna go !
