Yes David, my world is very different then most of you "southern" guys, and yes again, my everyday battle with rust is not so cool anymore, not to talk about the grease mix with rust. It was fun at first, restoring "Titanic" stuff, but i'm getting more tired to do so now. Also, when you work you as* off for more than 30 hours on a peice of junk, that will become something decent... you always have to justify your work, because it's not a fix price like conversion, people are expecting less at the beginning, but at the end, to produce a reliable engine like that: http://www.benplace.com/85westy/taupe50.jpg out of a rust bucket... it take hours.

This past summer, one of my good customer came in for a FI repare/reseal, the intake tube were so rusty that they had more then 10 hole in it... the morning he came for the job, he had another problem, the engine was drinking coolant, a lot... so i started working on that engine, 7 hours later, the engine was all in pieces. Verdict: Engine is finish, why, fist it has over 220k miles, second, EVERYTHING IS RUSTED to the bone, i can not save anything on that engine, not even the injectors: http://www.benplace.com/maritime2007/odd_dead2.jpg

So i made him a quote (exhaust was also cooked). the quote was over 5k$ (i had to find every single part to rebuilt him a VW engine, nothing was good on his old one, and that was without the needed complete exhaust system. You should have seen his face, not a funny sight. So, here came the second option (yes, we had an option and this is what i'm trying to share lately!!!!), a Subi. For a few K$ more he decided to go with a very LOW millage (under 5k miles) late Subi 2.5L that was in a test phase. This story is not about Subi, it's mostly about having an option.

So yes, i agree, there is a few very good option like Vanaru, ZTEC, Ticco and VW diesel engine, and is all good for you! I have choosen Subi, that is a personal choice, i have nothing against the other one if they are well done. (maybe Ticco... but that me)

I was always a fan of Japanese engine, and that sa been like that for the past 20 years, nothing as change, as for german engineering.. well, good for you if you like them but me i'm having some tec issue...

This is where we separate the open and closed minded people. Or the scared VS the more adventurer... the big difference with some of you and me is i have seen and tried both... still, I still love the sound of a pancake 1.8L engine with dual 40mm carb...
