Joe, I used Black POR15 on mine and it still looks great 18 months later. I wire brushed it, sanded it and prepped it with POR Metal Prep before I applied the POR15. I did both sides so as an added bonus it was a reasonably clean surface to lean against when I replace my heater control valve.
