What do you consider a long distance? I have seen the front ball bearing fail due to lack of lubrication with the van on a dolly. It is actually better to flat tow with a good tow bar. You can unbolt the axle shafts from the wheel side. If going through multiple states, you need to check laws for lighting, brake, and registration/insurance requirements.
