Subject: Leaky (dripping) fuel injector? (searched archives some...)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hi all.

Bought an 85 Transporter Vanagon for parts. I don't need to fix the engine, but if I can for little money, I will as it could be used by someone else and I would learn something in the process. I'd appreciate any help.

Here's what I know and have found:

PO said engine just stopped after it spilled a bunch of oil. He said engine wouldn't turn. To that end, he removed starter and swapped out alternator. He added oil.

I noticed a bit of gas in the bottom of the air intake elbow after removing air cleaner/AFM. Thought that was odd. Pulled one of the plugs, and gas started to spill out the hole! Pretty sure engine was almost full. I drained at least 5-6 litres of oil/gas from engine.

Am I likely dealing with a "dripping" fuel injector? Or is it more likely the fuel pressure regulator?

If I remove the fuel rail w/injectors attached, ( I noticed more gas in one cylinder than the others) can I turn key so fuel pump goes on then see if an injector is dripping?

Thanks for any help. Hopefully the gas in oil problem hasn't done too much damage to internals as it would be great to see someone else use it for however long it lasts. Appearantly it ran strong and didn't leak coolant.

Thanks,

Neil.
