I'll read up and check out procedure for checking fuel pressure reg.

I have spare air cooled Injectors and maybe a regulater, but no 1.9 WBX.

I'll have a look, but doubt these parts are the same. Too bad!

If I could get it to run, I'd practically give it away.

What you say makes sense. He or his mechanic were in the process of figuring out why engine wouln't turn. Battery and starter are out and another alternator is currently swapped in.

Given how much gas/oil was in crankcase, it probably got harder and harder to turn due to internal pressures and possibly friction between rings cylinders etc.
