Jeff, my 84 Vanagon was in far better shape than that. Yet, I received the mail from city officials who wanted me to prove that it was a drivable vehicle or to remove it from my drive way. The moment I received the mail I accepted the challenge and waited for them to come and knock at my door. They never did. I figure they did come but when they saw that my Vanagon looked more decent than many Honda in the neighborhood they left my Vanagon alone. Those city officials out to be sweeping some streets than peeking at people's drive way looking for Vanagons to steal.

The city's web site has a few "civil code" pages. One of the code says no major repairs such as rebuilding engine in the garage. Violation can result in $2500 fine in first offense. That's entirely "carp" in my opinion. I am fortunate to have a lawyer who will fight for me free of charge any time. So I will see what will happen if I eventually have to rebuild my 84's engine.

David
