Indeed, there was a Beetle diesel prototype built. A replica has been built somewhere, I think in the US. Iyt was covered years ago by "Hot VWs" or "VW & Porsche".

Look at the EA/ER engines cracked heads were common. Subaru doesn't always get it right.
