The pipe will get much hotter than the head, sometimes glowing red. I also red somewhere that is the proper direction. The next question is which way to put the gasket on the connection to that cast iron manifold. Not sure if it is correct but I still put the metal side to the pipe flange.

Dennis, this is the question I always had in mind and have no answers. Can you explain why metal side to the pipe? I had mine reversed. I put metal side on the cylinder head side. I did it with no reason.
