Most VW inline gas engines are tight fit no matter what. The 50 degree approach is a natural one for people who either have a diesel Vanagon or all the engine mounting parts and cooling hoses from one. If not, a 15 degree install often appears on the surface to be simpler. The fact that it will be too tall, resulting in compromised vehicle functionality, one often learns when it is too late. Syncros are another matter as they have a couple inches more height under the lid.
