Actually, Blake, one of the failure modes of an ignition switch is "Losing" contact to the ignition system when the key is turned to the start position. Sometimes you can get around this by gently turning the key just until the starter engages whereas turning it hard to the right will "Open" in up.

Maybe you should get another ignition switch (electrical part) and trying by unplugging the wires from the old one and putting them on the new one without actually swapping switches first. That way you could see if it operates normally before doing all the hard work.
