They get worn, and when engaging the "start" contacts, the "ON" contacts are not making contact. BTDT. Carry a jumper wire with you long enough to reach from the B+ on the alternator to the B+ on the coil. Next time it happens, connect the jumper (essentially hot-wiring it) and if it starts, replace the ignition switch. I always carry a spare with me.
