Roger,

There are definitely 1.8's inside vanagons out on the road...but for maybe
just a touch more money (not much), I'm sure you could come across a 2.2
with the same to half the mileage. The 2.2 is one heck of an engine - and a
perfect fit for the vanagon, as I'm sure you are aware. With the Japanese
import market on the East and West coasts, anyone in those areas can pick up
a motor for pretty cheap. The Subie mechanics around here all swear by the
2.2 (1994-1999). Most durable Subaru engine out on the road....and there are
a lot of em around here.
