Subject: Re: Clutch shutter, Now Rusty Vanagons

Reading this reminds me of a posting years ago here on this list. A young guy had just bought a Vanagon, passenger van as I recall, not a camper. He was asking questions about replacing the clutch (he had never done it before) and also outlined his grand plans for restoring this Vanagon. He also had a link to pictures of it. When I looked at the pics, I was shocked-it was one of the rustiest Vanagons I had ever seen. I wouldn't have put $5.00 into this van-I would not have bought it in the first place. Anyway, I sent him an email urging him to dump this van and look for another one. I explained that a cheap purchase price for something like this is usually not a bargain-months and/or years later and thousands of dollars and hours spent restoring something like this are not worth it-cheaper in the long run to get a decent one to begin with. He sent me a reply ripping me a new one, with things like "you need to chill out dude" and "why are you so negative?" . I was merely trying to g ive him the benefit of my prior experiences, which he obviously did not appreciate. Just wondering if this listee is still around, don't remember his name, but he had an iguana for a pet and I think he lived in Florida. Would love to here the results of your restoration if you're still on the list. Jeff
