I believe the digifant an improvement over the digijet with the elimination of the mechanical advance, funky idle valve(and associated yards of vacuum hoses) and idle module. I also think the cooling system is improved with the elimination of the metal pipes and the simplification(some what) of the plumbing in the engine bay. At least I have a lot less trouble filling the system in my 86 than the 85. As a lifelong VW bus owner I can not say that performance is really an issue with me.
