Searching for reasons for poor mileage in Mellow Yellow (1984 1.9l auto transmission), Dennis Haynes suggested I might check the torque converter for slippage. Using the procedure in Bentleys 37.16, my readings were high. The stall speed spec for this transmission type* is 2450 to 2750 rpm. I measured 2850, 2700, 2850 in three successive tests (allowing for cooling time in between), as indicated on my Tenma digital engine analyzer. The cheap-o analog tach on the dash read lower. So there might be a question of measurement accuracy here. According the Bentley's, if the stall speed is high, the test is to be done again in first gear. Here I measured 3000 rpm, still high. Bentley's tells us that in this case, "forward clutch is defective." First thing I'm going to do is see if I can get my mitts on a known-to-be-good tachometer to sort out possible instrumentation error. Second thing I'm going to do is toss out the following question: if the forward clutch is defective, how sucky is that? ==== * I presume it is the NH type based on the model year of the van (1984), the NH came into play in 10/82 per page 37.1a.
