Ya got me. Planetary gear sets have always bent my brain a little. Indulging in some dangerous speculation, but I would THINK that in 3rd gear the moving chunk of the whole crazy double-stacked planetary gear array is just locked up as one solid piece with the input shaft spinning the output shaft at 1:1....
