I've seen "economy" indicators on VDO gauges, these display a relative (better - worse) indication of how much fuel your engine is drinking -- not sure I've ever seen an actual MPG meter, I'd guess it would need to be calibrated somehow and I doubt it would be more than a ballpark indication at that.
