These are not really that good a subaru engine to use in a vanagon. The primary advantages of a 1.8 would be 'cheap' And 'not waterboxer, i.e. Something other than a waterboxer vanagon engine )

The late ones can have fuel injection, btw. I have a friend with a 89ish or 90 subaru Loyal wagon ....most definitely electronic fuel injection, which is GOOD. Scott www.turbovans.com

There are 3 Subaru 1.8 engines at Crazy Rays junkyard in Baltimore. www.crazyraysautoparts.com

Two from 1988 station wagens and 1 from a 1991 legacy wagon . I think they are 1.8 liters, all. Not sure, except for the years of subaru these engines are in..Carburated, I think. All with 80 to 90K miles on them. Seems to be true mileage, as the rear wheel openings are not rusted to pieces.

There are " private contractors" working all their yards who will pick or pull your engine for a fee.Not free.I said for a fee. :>) Crazy Rays charges about $175/engine.

Perhaps calling the yard will result in the yard contacting one of these Private contractors and they can pick and ship your engine.

Good pickings.Good luck.
