Allan,
   If adjustments don't help, there exists a shifter repair kit
http://tinyurl.com/yujsqt that includes " Bushings, Flanges, Plates &
Selector Lever for Vanagon manual transmission shift linkage". I purchased
this once when one of those items gave out and left me with only 3rd and 4th
gear to select from. Makes for exciting driving though; starting from 3rd.
