VW has that on newer cars too. My 2001 Passat has it. But the accuracy is not too great. It tends to give a higher number of miles per gallon than reality. It does give you an idea how your are driving though. If the number is lower than usual you know your foot has been too heavy on the pedal. My Passat once got 40+ miles per gallon coming down from Yosemite. In reality it's more like 30+ miles per gallon. Back into the city the number can go below 20. That's how bad city traffic can lower gas efficiency for the car.
