This is my knowledgeable reply:
The repair manuals on Fiche were an actual homogenization of Bentley
and VW - the VW part being the various Tech and Workshop Bulletins
issued throughout the vehicle's production inserted therein for the
vehicle involved. I have a library (in print form) of several
Workshop/Tech Bulletins which show certain repairs and specifications
in greater detail than what is shown in the later vehicle Bentley
manuals. While I have seen the fiche(s) in the past, I never bothered
to collect them and in retrospect I probably should have, especially
for the older models that in some fashion probably aren't all there in
the 12 CD Set.
Now for *some* later models, certain CDs are essentially the same as
what Bentley issued in their crummy E-Bahn format, but not all.
The other more commonly known fiche are the parts book fiche used in
the VW MPF2400 reader that was commonly seen at Volkswagen (and
Porsche-Audi) dealerships from 1974 until superseded by ETKA (and for
Porsche PET). Because of continual data transfer errors from the
original Parts Fiche to ETKA encountered over the years, I have
religiously retained my Parts Fiche collection and reader, as well as
my original collection Parts Books in print form stretching back to
the 50s, which is used daily in my work (and hobby during the
"off-time as well).
I'm still not sure I would spring $599 to bring my "library"
up-to-date, but I have spent a considerable sum over the past 40 years
for many of the reference books, fiche(s), machines and database
references that I do have. Some of them are irreplaceable and
contribute to answering questions directed to me from my website. I
just may burn up a credit card to get it anyway. Because of Allan's
comment of an "insecure" site, I'll just call on the telephone.
