ahh yes, the crossover tube. I've lost all of my
coolant
twice to this, and had a steady drip several other
times.
Nothing like a huge cloud of hot coolant suddenly
appearing behind you!
The first time, the tube broke at the connection back
near the rear wall, where the hose attaches to the
plastic
bracket. Fortunately, I was at the top of a hill and
could
coast all the way down to an exit ramp and on into a
gas station, and like many other times in my VW
experience,
someone was rolling up to help me before I even came
to a complete stop. These guys had a nice piece of
new radiator hose of the exact diameter that I needed
-
pretty nice for 3 a.m.! Unfortunately I needed a
hacksaw
to get enough of the plastic bracket out of the way
to attach the new hose, and for that I had to wait
until civilization opened for business. I never travel
without a hacksaw now! A few years later I had a
coolant leak going on (in addition to another
difficult
one I still have right now, but that's for another
post) and it was the cross-over tube again. It finally
broke
back at that same bracket, but this time there was
not enough plastic left to connect a new crossover
tube.
Fortunately, I have a junkyard van and simply
plugged in my extra coolant hose bracket from that.
But now I'm a little worried about ever replacing
that bracket..... I don't think Bus Depot has one,
only
place I ever looked, and if they don't have it....
I recently learned one source of my troubles here.
For years I've had problems caused by excessive engine
vibration. I've always suspected worn out motor
mounts (van sat on hot asphalt in the south for
an entire summer) not damping it off adequately,
but recently learned that the idle is just rough
enough to cause a bit of engine vibration. I now
suspect
rough spots on the AFM track (and no capacitor
fix until yesterday) as partly to blame.
But one place vibration
will show itself is in the connections to that
little cross-over tube.
What purpose does that tube accomplish anyway?
