My guess, since the engine lid hasn't been opened in about a year, if that's what I read, is that perhaps it's been running too cool all this time - this is quite common in 2.1 waterboxer vanagons. And yes, you sure do have to be careful with the 4 screws that hold the t-stat cover on the plastic thermostat housing. Just turning them with a socket can cause the metal nut in the plastic housing to just spin, or the nut head to break off. Sharply rapping them with a hammer and punch, as well as using penetrating oil well in advance sure helps. It's like if you do the right thing in the beginning, you can get the t-stat cover off ok. If you hurt the plastic t-stat housing, then it turns into a much bigger job. Scott www.turbovans.com

And may I add that IF thermostat needs to be changed, be careful. I recently read some thread in the archives that one part of the thermostat housing is easily damaged. Not clear on the details, but you might want to search the archives on that one.
