The picture is too close to tell much, and you don't say what year or model it is, so it's hard to be very helpful. But, first thing that comes to my mind is valve cover gasket, clogged breather, and also, some spark plugs go in tube that are sealed by seals to the valve cover surrounding them. Can't tell much with your pic though. an overall engine view would help, just to see what design it is.

My wife's Audi has been smelling like burning oil for the last few months. I ventured into the engine compartment and found this http://mywebhopserver.feddishbasses.com:81/vw/audi.html . It looks like a little puddle next to the spark plug hole. Any suggestions as to the source of this oil?
