While cleaning the connectors seems (at first) to be the easiest idea. It may not be the best idea. You can get very fine pipe cleaners. I have used very fine sandpaper (1200 grit) rolled up and inserted into the connectors.

The problem...if your connectors have issues, it is not inconceivable that the wire adjacent to the connector is also corroded. Fixing one without the other will simply transfer the problem (instead of melted connectors, you will have melted wires). This is especially true if the wires are exposed to the weather.
