I'll plead ignorance, since they are about the same era I assumed that VW would do some parts sharing.

The ones I'm thinking of were black (for gauge) or blue (for ECU) and were mounted in a plastic flange where the coolant hose connected to the head. Held in with a little spring clip and sealed with an O-ring.

If they are not troublesome in Vanagons, then I'm glad to hear it.
