I don't doubt your jetta but is it the same sensor as the Vanagon, I don't think it is.

Additionally we are talking the temp gauge sensor and not the temp2 (which is similar to the ecu sensor you mention) which are a bit more prone to fail in the Vanagon...but the shops say seldom a new one!
