Hi,

I consider the vanagon temp gauge to be one of the very best there is in the car world ( not counting the sometimes over active level sensor function ) .

I find them to be dead accurate. ( voltage stabilizer in the dash has to be healthy of course )

Just verify with a infrared temp gun right where the temp sensor is on the engine.

Straight up on the LED is 180 degrees F, or darn close to it.

Cooler is not better, warmer is.

But run however you like.

Going by the heater output is not a reliable way to judge actual running temp.

Here's a fun one - on an OBD-II subaru engine, you can hook up your diagnostic program, and see exactly what temp the ECU temp sensor is seeing, right to the very degree. I like that.

If your temp gauge is calibrated and working correctly, Anything well below the LED is much too cool running. I strive for just to the right edge of the LED

Hi Scott,

At first, when I put this engine together, I thought the thermostat was stuck open. On Jim Thompson's recommendation I used the colder t-stat. The heater has always put out plenty of heat. I figured too that the gauge might not reading accurate either. Jeff
